A Seasonal Flu Vaccine Could Protect You from Bird Flu
Despite what the CDC says...
I've got a new piece up. I wasn't planning to post again so soon, but this question felt important and I wanted an answer for myself and everyone else who's been paying attention to the bird flu dumpster fire: Does a seasonal flu vaccine offer any protection against H5N1 bird flu at all? The short answer is yeah, potentially, since we don't have any other options right now. Several studies in peer-reviewed journals for the last 20 years have found varying levels of cross-protection between H1N1, H2N3, and other strains, including H5N1. It would be better if we had a specific H5N1 vaccine, or a universal flu vaccine, but something is better than nothing. If you've been thinking about it, I would go ahead and get one.
